Devotional/Movie Night for Youth?

This past Saturday, Halloween, was my birthday. Rather than invite everyone we knew over, or even just the folks from church, we opted to have a party oriented towards kids. We invited some of my daughter’s friends from school, but in the end only the church kids showed up. They’re a great bunch. We ate pizza, bobbed for apples and played a game where they had to plunk their faces down in flour and dig for gumballs (prizes were involved, but you know it was the challenge that got them). We watched the Wolverine movie, had cake and the evening was over.

For a couple of years now my wife and I have been mulling over getting involved with church youth ministry. A young man from our Newark Hispanic congregation has started having youth classes Saturday mornings, and I hear they are going well. He conducts them in English. A couple from the Brazilian congregation have also been doing once-a-month Bible studies and outings with the Brazilian teenagers. With my daughter in public school and in contact with so many neighborhood kids, it sort of makes sense to try something like what we did last Saturday on a regular basis and invite them over too. A devotional, pizza and a movie sounds like a good idea, doesn’t it?
