			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In January 2006, IgneousQuill was born. It came in the aftermath of the worst year of my life thus far, the year I lost my father, quit full-time ministry and moved my family across country from New Mexico to New Jersey. In those difficult days, the original blog provided a means to sort out my thoughts and find my heart again. Over the years that blog shifted from personal to theological to technological in focus, and then broke into four blogs, each with a distinct subject area. For about a year or so I&#8217;ve been mulling over the future of the &#8220;brand,&#8221; if I dare call it that, and have finally decided to retire it.</p>
<p>The blogs bearing the IgneousQuill name will remain live online, at least for the foreseeable future, but will no longer be updated. I&#8217;m now blogging at &#8220;<a href="http://www.missionaljourneyman.com/">Missional Journeyman</a>,&#8221; and invite you to join me there.</p>
<p>If you are a blogger and have me in your blogroll, please update the link.</p>

<p><em>&#8220;Your time is limited, so don&#8217;t waste it living someone else&#8217;s life. Don&#8217;t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people&#8217;s thinking. Don&#8217;t let the noise of others&#8217; opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.&#8221;</em> <strong>- Steve Jobs</strong></p>

<p>I am honored to be with you today at your commencement from one of the finest universities in the world. I never graduated from college. Truth be told, this is the closest I&#8217;ve ever gotten to a college graduation. Today I want to tell you three stories from my life. That&#8217;s it. No big deal. Just three stories.</p>
<p>The first story is about connecting the dots.</p>
<p>I dropped out of Reed College after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so before I really quit. So why did I drop out?</p>
<p>It started before I was born. My biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption. She felt very strongly that I should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted at birth by a lawyer and his wife. Except that when I popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl. So my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: &#8220;We have an unexpected baby boy; do you want him?&#8221; They said: &#8220;Of course.&#8221; My biological mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school. She refused to sign the final adoption papers. She only relented a few months later when my parents promised that I would someday go to college.</p>
<p>And 17 years later I did go to college. But I naively chose a college that was almost as expensive as Stanford, and all of my working-class parents&#8217; savings were being spent on my college tuition. After six months, I couldn&#8217;t see the value in it. I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to help me figure it out. And here I was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life. So I decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out OK. It was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions I ever made. The minute I dropped out I could stop taking the required classes that didn&#8217;t interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.</p>
<p>It wasn&#8217;t all romantic. I didn&#8217;t have a dorm room, so I slept on the floor in friends&#8217; rooms, I returned coke bottles for the 5¢ deposits to buy food with, and I would walk the 7 miles across town every Sunday night to get one good meal a week at the Hare Krishna temple. I loved it. And much of what I stumbled into by following my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on. Let me give you one example:</p>
<p>Reed College at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the country. Throughout the campus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed. Because I had dropped out and didn&#8217;t have to take the normal classes, I decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this. I learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the amount of space between different letter combinations, about what makes great typography great. It was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science can&#8217;t capture, and I found it fascinating.</p>
<p>None of this had even a hope of any practical application in my life. But ten years later, when we were designing the first Macintosh computer, it all came back to me. And we designed it all into the Mac. It was the first computer with beautiful typography. If I had never dropped in on that single course in college, the Mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts. And since Windows just copied the Mac, it&#8217;s likely that no personal computer would have them. If I had never dropped out, I would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal computers might not have the wonderful typography that they do. Of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when I was in college. But it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.</p>
<p>Again, you can&#8217;t connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards. So you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something — your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.</p>
<p>My second story is about love and loss.</p>
<p>I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.</p>
<p>I really didn&#8217;t know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down &#8211; that I had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me. I met with David Packard and Bob Noyce and tried to apologize for screwing up so badly. I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.</p>
<p>I didn&#8217;t see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.</p>
<p>During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the worlds first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple&#8217;s current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn&#8217;t been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don&#8217;t lose faith. I&#8217;m convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You&#8217;ve got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven&#8217;t found it yet, keep looking. Don&#8217;t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you&#8217;ll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don&#8217;t settle.</p>
<p>My third story is about death.</p>
<p>When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: &#8220;If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you&#8217;ll most certainly be right.&#8221; It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: &#8220;If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?&#8221; And whenever the answer has been &#8220;No&#8221; for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.</p>
<p>Remembering that I&#8217;ll be dead soon is the most important tool I&#8217;ve ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure &#8211; these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.</p>
<p>About a year ago I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in the morning, and it clearly showed a tumor on my pancreas. I didn&#8217;t even know what a pancreas was. The doctors told me this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months. My doctor advised me to go home and get my affairs in order, which is doctor&#8217;s code for prepare to die. It means to try to tell your kids everything you thought you&#8217;d have the next 10 years to tell them in just a few months. It means to make sure everything is buttoned up so that it will be as easy as possible for your family. It means to say your goodbyes.</p>
<p>I lived with that diagnosis all day. Later that evening I had a biopsy, where they stuck an endoscope down my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and got a few cells from the tumor. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I&#8217;m fine now.</p>
<p>This was the closest I&#8217;ve been to facing death, and I hope it&#8217;s the closest I get for a few more decades. Having lived through it, I can now say this to you with a bit more certainty than when death was a useful but purely intellectual concept:</p>
<p>No one wants to die. Even people who want to go to heaven don&#8217;t want to die to get there. And yet death is the destination we all share. No one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be, because Death is very likely the single best invention of Life. It is Life&#8217;s change agent. It clears out the old to make way for the new. Right now the new is you, but someday not too long from now, you will gradually become the old and be cleared away. Sorry to be so dramatic, but it is quite true.</p>
<p>Your time is limited, so don&#8217;t waste it living someone else&#8217;s life. Don&#8217;t be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people&#8217;s thinking. Don&#8217;t let the noise of others&#8217; opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.</p>
<p>When I was young, there was an amazing publication called The Whole Earth Catalog, which was one of the bibles of my generation. It was created by a fellow named Stewart Brand not far from here in Menlo Park, and he brought it to life with his poetic touch. This was in the late 1960&#8242;s, before personal computers and desktop publishing, so it was all made with typewriters, scissors, and polaroid cameras. It was sort of like Google in paperback form, 35 years before Google came along: it was idealistic, and overflowing with neat tools and great notions.</p>
<p>Stewart and his team put out several issues of The Whole Earth Catalog, and then when it had run its course, they put out a final issue. It was the mid-1970s, and I was your age. On the back cover of their final issue was a photograph of an early morning country road, the kind you might find yourself hitchhiking on if you were so adventurous. Beneath it were the words: &#8220;Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.&#8221; It was their farewell message as they signed off. Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish. And I have always wished that for myself. And now, as you graduate to begin anew, I wish that for you.</p>

Throughout the book he talks only of helping children, making mo mention of gender other than where appropriate. So, it was disconcerting afterward to find constant references in his <a href="http://www.ikat.org/">Central Asia Institute</a>&#8216;s promotional material to helping girls. In fact, the group&#8217;s mission statement includes the phrase &#8220;<em>especially for girls</em>.&#8221; Really? Girls especially or even exclusively?</p>
<p>Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn co-wrote &#8220;<a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0307387097/ref=s9_simh_gw_p14_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&amp;pf_rd_s=center-2&amp;pf_rd_r=1ZVSNFF531FGA93MNRXT&amp;pf_rd_t=101&amp;pf_rd_p=470938631&amp;pf_rd_i=507846">Half the Sky</a>.&#8221; Admittedly, I have yet to read it. I&#8217;m certain I&#8217;ll enjoy it when I finally get to it. Still, it&#8217;s clearly about girls and women especially in connection with humanitarian work and international aid.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s yet another video I came across recently that talks about helping girls especially:</p>

<p>So, what&#8217;s going on here?</p>
<p>Consider first, the negative, cynical view. It&#8217;s tough to raise money for non-profits, especially considering just how many non-profits there are out there. With so many organizations competing for funds, a good strategy is in order. If a non-profit talks about helping girls especially, somehow that opens wallets and purses. It&#8217;s politically correct, but also makes sense from a practical standpoint.</p>
<p>That brings me to the second, more positive outlook on this topic. Women tend to be more focused on taking care of their children and households. It&#8217;s sadly very true that throughout the world, men are more likely to take their earnings and blow it on wine, women and song (or the available local equivalents). Check out Kristof&#8217;s article: <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2010/05/23/opinion/23kristof.html">&#8220;Moonshine or the Kids?&#8221;</a> for more on this problem. It&#8217;s a hotly debated idea, but I don&#8217;t have any argument. Sure, there are irresponsible, neglectful mothers, but there seem to be proportionally far more undependable men in circulation.</p>
<p>Despite all that, when I think about the sort of youth-focused, community development work that I dream of doing, engaging young people in social media and vocational tech training, I can&#8217;t imagine focusing only or primarily on girls. Boys and girls, men and women are made equally in the image of God. Both need to be reconciled to God, both have enormous potential for transformation to make a real, positive impact on their homes and society at large. It may make sense to at times have divided classes and activities, and most certainly it would make more sense for women to mentor girls and men to mentor boys, but at the end of the day, everyone ought to be included.</p>
<p>Or&#8230;am I way off? What do you think? I&#8217;m particularly interested in feedback from those engaged in non-profit work.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>For several weeks now folks from the <a href="http://www.cjcoc.org/">Central Jersey Church of Christ</a> has been volunteering a little of their weekends to help clean up a building that belongs to the church in Perth Amboy, New Jersey. While there are multiple possibilities for this property, many dreams are centering around what the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/HOPE-worldwide-Central-Jersey-Chapter/193105680705182">HOPE worldwide Central Jersey Chapter</a> can do there. Aside from office space for the the chapter, this is a great location to host a Saturday Academy, aside from other events.</p>
<p>For anyone connected with Central Jersey Church of Christ (or any of the area Churches of Christ, for that matter), why not consider pitching in to help with cleaning, painting and other simple maintenance? With a little TLC we can make this into a place of encouragement and new horizons for area young people. And, like I mentioned above, we can dream other dreams as well for this place. Join in, take part, bring your skills or just your willingness to help.</p>

<p>One of my cousins&#8217; daughters (that would make her a first cousin, once removed, in case you care to know) is a fourth grade teacher in an underresourced neighborhood in Arizona. She&#8217;s looking to raise a little extra private funding for a couple of projects to improve the experience for her class, starting next Fall. Check out her blurb:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;I teach fourth grade at a Title 1 school in Arizona. Our neighborhood is one in which families are working day in and day out to provide a better life for their kids. Over 90% of our families qualify for FREE lunch whereas the remaining percentage only pays a reduced fee. Our students are faced with violence, drugs, and many other events that require frequent police involvement. Though the students are faced with many challenges, they also come to school with a positive attitude and the belief that they CAN be successful.&#8221;</em></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://cristoinvicto.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/img00683.jpg"><img class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-755" title="IMG00683" src="http://cristoinvicto.files.wordpress.com/2011/03/img00683.jpg?w=490&#038;h=367" alt="" width="490" height="367" /></a>Not long ago <a href="http://igneousquill.org/2011/02/21/aftershock-kent-annans-presentation-at-new-york-theological-seminary/">while at New York Theological Seminary to hear Kent Annan speak</a> I had the privilege of meeting Lisa Sharon Harper, Executive Director of <a href="http://www.nyfaithjustice.org/">New York Faith &amp; Justice</a>, a Christian group committed to advocacy and community organizing for a more just society. She invited me to a training session to be held just a couple of weeks from that time, on a Friday. Although I had to take a day off work to be there bright and early at Judson Memorial Church, I did it. I&#8217;m glad I did.</p>
<p>Although I heard nearly 200 signed up online to participate, I have no idea how many were there. It was easily over 100, though, and 150 would sound completely reasonable from what I could see. The group was large enough to impede us from having 100% participation in all of the activities, but I don&#8217;t think that took anything away from the training at all. We all saw the methods and had everything clearly explained. Besides, it was really just an &#8220;introductory training,&#8221; the full, regular training takes a week.</p>
<p>The training was co-lead by Rev. Alexia Salvatierra, the executive director of <a href="http://cluela.org/">C.L.U.E. (Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice)</a> and by Lisa Harper. From what I understood, the latter has been apprenticed to the former, learning the &#8220;faith-rooted organizing&#8221; methodology in order to teach it to others and implement it more fully in New York.</p>
<p>A few explanations need to be made before I share more about the day and the content of the training.</p>
<p>First, the difference between benevolence, community development and community organizing.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ve all heard the old saying: &#8220;You give a man a fish, he eats for a day. You teach a man to fish, and he eats for a lifetime.&#8221; Giving the fish is benevolence. Many churches do that with a food bank. Teaching someone to fish is community development. That&#8217;s what I&#8217;m talking about <a href="http://igneousquill.org/2011/01/31/community-tech-centers/">when I discuss teaching tech to poor and at-risk youth in Brazil</a>. But, what if the man goes to the lake to fish, and there&#8217;s a wall keeping him out? That&#8217;s when community organizing is called into play.</p>
<p>Second, &#8220;faith-rooted&#8221; organizing seeks to call together people of like faith to take action. This may be as broad as interfaith or as narrow as a single faith, like Christianity. It is not standard, secular organizing with an &#8220;us vs. them&#8221; mindset. Faith-rooted organizing sees people and their institutions as fallen but redeemable. Rather than weakness in those viewed as adversaries, this approach calls for seeking common ground and common interests.</p>
<p>Third, understand that I do not endorse all that is called &#8220;organizing,&#8221; in much the same was as not all that is called &#8220;church&#8221; seems correct to me. Some agendas I simply do not endorse. The principles of faith-rooted, community organizing do find a basis in Scripture. No only do the prophets call for justice, but Jesus himself taught methods of non-violent resistance, as Walter Wink pointed out in several books, including in &#8220;<a href="http://www.amazon.com/Powers-That-Be-Theology-Millennium/dp/0385487525/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;s=books&amp;qid=1299367254&amp;sr=8-1">The Powers that Be</a>.&#8221;</p>
<p>What follows comes from my notes taken that day:</p>

<p>It was also noted at this point that this model is &#8220;open source,&#8221; meaning it&#8217;s open to adoption by other groups that can modify and adapt it at will for their purposes, so long as due credit is given.</p>
<p>Most community organizing begins with private pain in communities that goes public. Something in life isn&#8217;t right, some people deal with it alone, but then when it&#8217;s brought to light it&#8217;s found that many share that same problem. The community at this point has the right to define its own common values and goals. It&#8217;s seeking power for a purpose, and not for power&#8217;s sake. This is not only in solving the immediate problem, as power is a means to a much broader end. This &#8220;big picture&#8221; has been identified by some with the &#8220;kingdom of God&#8221; or, as Martin Luther King, Jr. put it, &#8220;the beloved community.&#8221; This is the much broader goal of more narrow, focused efforts.</p>
<p>A long view is needed. Even if in the short term we can&#8217;t solve everything with a particular injustice, we can and must do what&#8217;s possible now to contribute toward achieving it someday.</p>
<p>At this point a story was shared of women on a plantation who worked from dawn until dusk, received very low wages and had little to feed their children. They took some of the banana starts and planted them around their homes to provide extra food. The company, an American corporation, found out about this and sent men in to rip out the banana trees. A missionary who was there visiting this saw what happened and asked an organizer if this was worth it, if things would ever really change. She said, &#8220;Soon.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Soon? How soon?&#8221;, he asked.</p>
<p>&#8220;Soon. In the time of my daughter&#8217;s daughters, soon.&#8221;</p>
<p>One of the key lessons I took away from the training was identifying the lies in society. It&#8217;s a matter of framing the issue.</p>
<p>First, ask: &#8220;What is the lie that most people believe that justifies the issue?&#8221; Put differently, seek the core lie.</p>
<p>Second, &#8220;What is the spiritual truth in response to this lie?&#8221;</p>
<p>Third, &#8220;What are the clearest manifestations of these lies.&#8221;</p>
<p>Taking those steps helps clarify the issue and provides ideas for where to begin taking specific action.</p>
<p>Vocation was defined in the training as being &#8220;where the world&#8217;s deep hunger and your deep gladness meet.&#8221; Further, the point was made that during his earthly ministry, Jesus called individuals, not groups. Although there&#8217;s a place for a &#8220;general call,&#8221; we should really work to forming teams coherently and individually.</p>
<p>One of the more inspirational stories of the day, at least to me, was about Archbishop Desmond Tutu during the days of South African apartheid. He preached every Sunday against apartheid, and one Easter Sunday the government sent soldiers to surround the building. Clearly, it was an attempt to silence him on the subject. Would he speak against apartheid or not? People were afraid both that he would and there&#8217;d be violence, and that he wouldn&#8217;t and the government would win. Standing before the congregation, he began to hop and laugh. Laughter is infectious, and pretty soon not only the congregation but even the men with guns are laughing out loud. Finally, Tutu says something along the lines of, &#8220;Friends, we are celebrating. We see the day when we will be free, and we rejoice. Come and celebrate our freedom with us, because we have already won.&#8221;</p>
<p>There was no violence that day.</p>
<p>The point of the story is that there is prophetic power in hope, and hope involves bringing the future into the present.</p>
<p>While I have many more notes from that day, there is simply too much to share in one blog post. This is already too long for most people to read. Perhaps in the near future I can type up the notes and share them online. Even better would be if I could find a copy of the powerpoint slides from the presentation.</p>
<p>As I mentioned above, this one a one-day, introductory training session. There is talk of a full series of lessons either during a week or over the course of a few week in the summer. I certainly hope they opt for Saturdays so I can attend. There is much to be learned that can be applied on the ground in Brazil.</p>

<p>The video above was shown at a recent joint worship assembly of the New York City church and the Central Jersey church. My family wasn&#8217;t too thrilled about going into the city for church that day, and opted instead to pay a visit to the <a href="http://www.freeholdcoc.com/">Freehold Church of Christ</a>.  This presentation is very encouraging and challenging (such goals!), but I had two main concerns when I saw it initially. One was about the term, &#8220;Tri-State Region of the International Church  of Christ,&#8221; and the second was the reference to &#8220;regional elders.&#8221;  I did some fact-checking and it turns out there was some misunderstanding on my  part, so I provide the following explanation for anyone else who might  be curious.</p>
<p>What I&#8217;ve been told is that this fellowship within  the <a id="link_0" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Restoration_Movement">Stone-Campbell  Movement</a> is opting to be interdependent, rather than formally  denominational (or more accurately, &#8220;sectarian,&#8221; as in the past, with a  strict hierarchy above and beyond the local church) or (more-or-less)  completely independent, as is the case with the<em> </em><a id="link_1" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Churches_of_Christ"><em>a cappella </em>Churches  of Christ</a> and <a id="link_2" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Independent_Christian_Churches/Churches_of_Christ">independent  Christian Churches/Churches of Christ</a>.</p>
<p>The &#8220;regional elders&#8221;  refers to the regions of the New York City church, not to the  &#8220;Tri-State Region&#8221; as a whole.  It has further been explained to me that  there will only be cooperation in assuring that churches prepare and  set apart qualified elders, not that there will be a council of elders  external to the congregation.</p>
<p>That said, the plans, aspirations and objectives set forth are really inspiring. I&#8217;m proud that my family is a part of the <a href="http://www.cjcoc.org/">Central Jersey Church of Christ</a>, and for the first time really feel at home not only in the <a href="http://www.mun.ca/rels/restmov/restmov.html">Restoration Movement</a> as a whole, but within a particular segment of it.</p>
